Statistics of Hipparcos binaries : probing the 1 – 10 AU separation range ?
نویسنده
چکیده
The observation of double stars by Hipparcos is modelled in order to check the statistics of double-star solutions in the Hipparcos Catalogue and to set quantitative limits on binary distributions. A Galaxy model is combined with models of binary distributions and of the observation process to derive the expected numbers of the different kinds of binary solutions in the Catalogue (component, acceleration, orbital and stochastic solutions). The observed number of component (C) and acceleration (G) solutions among bright (V <∼ 7–8) main-sequence stars are not consistent with a model having the same binary frequency and distributions as found by Duquennoy & Mayor (1991) for solar-type field stars. The number of companions per primary is estimated to 25 ± 5% for semi-major axes from 1 to 10 AU, and to 43 ± 20% for the range 10–100 AU. The fitted model predicts about three times as many orbital solutions as actually found in the catalogue, which suggests that many more orbits could be determined by analysis of the Hipparcos intermediate astrometric data. Future space astrometry missions will be able to probe binaries with separations of 1–10 AU at distances of several kpc by means of their curved motions.

The distribution of Galactic-disk wide binaries shows a clear break in slope at projected separations of about r ⊥ ∼ 2500 AU in two basically independent surveys by Chanamé & Gould and Lépine & Bongiorno. The latter also showed that the frequency of wide-binary companions to G-star primaries declines mono-tonically as a function of companion mass. We show that both effects can be explained by t...
متن کاملThe LuckyCam survey for very low mass binaries – II. 13 new M4.5–M6.0 binaries
We present results from a high angular resolution survey of 77 very low mass (VLM) binary systems with 6.0 V − K colour 7.5 and proper motion 0.15 arcsec yr−1. 21 VLM binaries were detected, 13 of them new discoveries. The new binary systems range in separation between 0.18 and 1.3 arcsec. The distance-corrected binary fraction is 13.6+6.5 −4 per cent, in agreement with previous results. Nine o...
متن کاملTesting the universality of star formation – II. Comparing separation distributions of nearby star-forming regions and the field
We have measured the multiplicity fractions and separation distributions of seven young starforming regions using a uniform sample of young binaries. Both the multiplicity fractions and separation distributions are similar in the different regions. A tentative decline in the multiplicity fraction with increasing stellar density is apparent, even for binary systems with separations too close (19...
متن کاملBinary frequency of very young brown dwarfs at separations smaller than 3 AU ⋆
Searches for companions of brown dwarfs by direct imaging probe mainly orbital separations greater than 3–10 AU. On the other hand, previous radial velocity surveys of brown dwarfs are mainly sensitive to separations smaller than 0.6 AU. It has been speculated if the peak of the separation distribution of brown dwarf binaries lies right in the unprobed range. The present work for the first time...
متن کاملRe - processing the Hipparcos Transit Data and Intermediate
Only 235 entries were processed as astrometric binaries with orbits in the Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogue (ESA 1997). However, the Intermediate Astrometric Data (IAD) and Transit Data (TD) made available by ESA make it possible to re-process the stars that turned out to be spectroscopic binaries after the completion of the Catalogue. This paper illustrates how TD and IAD may be used in conjuncti...
